Directors


George F. McDonough, Ph.D.

Dr. McDonough is the Chaiman of the Board of Directors and Vice President of the Center for Aging. His initial interest sprang from trying to bring to Huntsville hospitals the same high level of palliative care for dying patients as was given to his wife at University Hospital in Birmingham. Although this has not been achieved, he has broadened his interest to the full range of the Center for Aging and is now serving as Chair of the Board of Directors. He retired from NASA as Director of Science and Engineering at the Marshall Space Flight Center after 32 years of service. He is a four-year Navy veteran, including service in the Korean conflict.

Zaheer Khan, M.D.

Dr. Khan is the Founder, President and Medical Director of the Center for Aging. He has been a clinical Gerontologist for over thirty years in various parts of the world, including several different countries. He  established a geriatric practice in the community in 1999. He has established a Comprehensive Community based Fall Prevention Program in Huntsville, Alabama. He serves as the Director of Medication Education at Oakwood University, the Director of ACE Unit at Crestwood Hospital, and a Professor of Geriatrics at the M.R. Medical College India. Dr. Khan brings a lifetime of International learning and teaching from the bedside of the ailing patient. He shares a vision with his patients to establish a model of care for the elderly based on scientific knowledge and human understanding.


James G. Berry

Mr. Berry has been an Ordained Minister of the Methodist Church for 40 years. He is the Founding Director of Social Service Agency for the Elderly, which evolved into the Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center. He is a past Associate Chaplain at Huntsville Hospital. Mr. Berry is serving as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors.


Rhea Brightwell

Mrs. Brightwell serves as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Center for Aging . She was the owner and operator of a large accounting firm for many years in Huntsville and has done the accounting for many small start-up corporations. She has a great interest in garden clubs and currently serves and has served as a board member of many national, state, and local garden clubs.

Jack Freedman

Mr. Freedman served as State Chairman of the Kairos Prison Ministry. Also served as the Alabama representative on the Kairos National Board of Directors. Is past Treasurer and Membership Secretary of the American Hosta Society.  Has served many hours of volunteer work with the “First Stop” program, helping the homeless make their way back into respectable living quarters. He retired after 27 years with the NASA Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. He is a WWII army veteran. He devotes most of his time as a caregiver for his wife who is living with the agony of Dementia. He has a deep and abiding care for the aged and a personal interest in the prevention of accidental falls by our senior citizens.
